Mia Caro famiglia e amici,
This letter seems to be all about food! On our last day in Positano, we decided to spoil ourselves with a nice lunch…check out the linguine con astice (lobster) in the beautiful Buca di Bacco Hotel, right on the beach. A great way to end our time in Positano.
After farewelling the delightful Paul and Lucia at Casa Maresca, we set off for Naples, and our ferry. The ferry turned out to be a ship, swallowing fully loaded semi-trailers we lost count of and many, many cars and passengers. Our cabin was comfortable and we enjoyed a tasty meal in one of the restaurants.
Then…..benvenuto in Sicilia – Welcome to Sicily
Our hotel in Palermo, the Massimo Plaza is right opposite the magnificent Teatro Massimo (above). The stairs are famous as the setting for the finale of Godfather III. It is here we met Marco Romeo, our guide from Palermo StrEat Food Tours.
This was an extremely interesting three hours….
Capo markets (see below); we tried frittola – you can Google it, really too disgusting to describe but tasted OK (Sam, definitely not vegetarian); then arancine (see pic of Marco); then panelle e cazzille; then sfincione (a light bread – see pic of the vendor); and then….some pane con meusa (the famous Palermo spleen sandwich). Before you through up, it wasn’t that bad – a bit like kidney and liver, but probably an acquired taste. Don’t come here just for that. We finished with some welcome granita.
Palermo is really interesting. We will explore more tomorrow , but the architecture is stunning, ranging from areas reminiscent of Milan and Naples, to other areas still not restored after bombing in WWII.
We finished the day at Ristorante da Bacca. The young chef (28), is experimenting with different ways of cooking and presenting Italian classics, and will make a name for himself. The filetto di vitello was cooked in a creamy nero d’avola sauce and presented with segments of grilled vegetables dressed with swirls of balsamico – it was a work of art….and tasted incredible. In Palermo they say the food is bello, and the women, saporiti (the food is beautiful, and the women, tasty). Just part of the charm of Palermo.
Ci vediamo, Colin and Sally
