It’s been a busy few days, so catching up on the blog. On Saturday, after a short cruise during breakfast to Schweich, we set out on a 53 km ride to Bernkastel-Kues. We are really in vineyard country now with vines as far as the eye can see.

Not long after setting out, we stopped at the remains of a Roman villa.

Then a beautiful ride right through the middle of the vineyards. This really was special and just what we imagined the trip might be like. We passed through many villages, all with their church spire; and the apparently famous wine areas of Trittenheim and Piersport (look up the story of Piersport and the “little golden droplets”.

After lunch at Neumagen, we set of on the next 25 kms to Bernkastel-kues, again through beautiful vineyards and villages.

So, it turns out that this particular Saturday night is the end of August which means a wine festival to celebrate the start of the grape harvest. Bernkastel-Kues is humming – dozens of wine tastings, sausage barbeques, oompah bands, regular bands and fireworks. Cannot believe that actually heard a German band do a cover of The Voice. We navigated many hundreds of happy, reisling filled Germans, all singing and having a generally well-behaved good time.

Shaky start for some on Sunday for the next 45 km ride to Zell. Amazing landscapes again and a stop in Traben-Trarbach – famous for its art nouveau architecture.

Our stop for Sunday night is in Zell, famous for its Zeller Schwarze Katz ( black cat) white wine.

In Zell, we also enjoyed a wine tasting at Weingut Treis.

This weekend was big. Only one day to go. Tomorrow we ride for Cochem.

They tell me Riesling is good for saddle soreness. So, is aged Riesling good for aged saddles? Wonderful travelling with you and the gang.

You’re taking me back in history Colin. I travelled the Moselle in 1984 and fell in love with the same villages that you are showing me now. I too recall those wonderful warm people and their pride in their vineyards.
I love waking to your pictures and stories.
Cheers
Jen
