So, on Sundays, it appears that the only train service to Metz from Epernay runs back to Paris and then to Metz turning a short trip into three hours – albeit at nearly 300 kph. Thanks to Megan’s research we enjoyed a direct trip to our hotel in Metz in a black Mercedes van, like rock stars, at well over 100k kph, at only a few euros extra per couple. Tres bien!

The La Citadelle Metz is a fairly new and very comfortable hotel an easy walk to the centre of town.
After checking in, we found a table in one the crowded squares, explored the town centre and visited the magnificent cathedral. We came back later and enjoyed an organ concert.

Enjoyed dinner at Bistro Balthazar – they seem to specialise in boeuf – and also enjoyed a couple of good Côtes du Rhônes.
And so on to Monday – after some great croissants and cappuccinos, we set off for the Centre du Pompidou Metz and took in the current exhibitions. Following is a snippet.

Stopped for lunch at a small restaurant in another crowded square and enjoyed what seemed the perfect dish for the heart of Lorraine – Quiche Lorraine, salad, cold beer and wine.

Dinner tonight at La Reserve at the hotel. Excellent food and wine.

Tomorrow we board our barge and head off down the Moselle.

love waking up to your news!

Colin, a job is waiting for you as a travel writer. Your next mission will be Spain. Your descriptions of wine, food, art and culture lack nothing except a good musical note. Organs!
In the meantime, please have a great time and I look forward to the next edition, hot off the press.
Merveilleux. Bon Voyage.
