We started Tuesday with a small ‘red bus’ tour, all translated to English in our earpieces, and it was fantastic. The bus drove all over the old city of Perugia, saving kilometres of walking, and we learnt all about the city’s history, noted the original Etruscan sections of walls and later Roman and medieval additions. Highly recommended tour.

Then we found the Santino Panatteria Pasticciera in Piazza Giacomo Matteotti. Too difficult to chose what to buy from the amazing selections of pastries. We are starting to find places the locals patronise and are enjoying the results. I had sfoglatina alla mele and Sally, an anelli anice. Both very tasty.

This afternoon, we really got into the Etruscan and Roman history with a vist to Sotterranea Archeologica, an interesting tour deep under the cathedral where we saw Etruscan stone roads with wheel ruts, and stone walls built over 2000 years ago.
The archaeological dig is still ongoing and illustrates the amazing history of the city.

Then a quick visit to the Cathedral di San Lorenzo

Dinner tonight was at Ristorante Via del Parione – burrata, pomodoro, salami, balsamico, olivi, carciofi e insalata. Washed down with a vino nobile di montepulciano!

More exploring tomorrow and Assisi on Wednesday.

What did those Romans ever do for us? And as for the Etruscsns, well they just disappeared!
Magnificent.
